Korbin Dio

He is taller than most of his peers. He has bangs that extend on either side to frame his face. The back of his hair is much shorter than the bangs, and is very messy, even when brushed. His hair is black, but shines in the light with iridescent hues similar to a crow’s feathers. He has dark, almost black, red eyes. 

He has feathered wings where ears generally would be, with small ear holes covered under the feathers. Similar to many fae, he has small fangs for canines. 

His dorm uniform is similar to his doormates, but his jacket has zippers for his wings and he wears tall boots. He wears a pink eyeshadow around his eyes. 

Personality

Korbin is an outwardly outgoing fae. He talks to many people in his grade and does his best to help everyone around him. He does his best to make sure his friends are cared for. This is a double edged sword though, as he is used to people around him taking advantage of his kindness. Korbin is popular among younger students as he has prevented many from forming deals with Azul and many reach out to him for help on assignments, studying, and personal drama. 

Despite his outward appearance, Korbin is actually quite introverted, preferring to hang out alone or with close friends such as Karma, Marino, Desiree, or Leona. He spends most of his time sleeping due to the exhaustion of carrying so many problems on his shoulders. Inwardly, Korbin struggles with a lot of self doubt and self worth issues. He is lazy and lacks care for himself. He has a habit of putting others before himself in many situations. 

Korbin feels truly alive when he is playing Spelldrive, as he knows that he can rely on his team as much as they might rely on him. He enjoys the adrenalin rush that comes from wins as it is the happiest he feels most the time. His joy of winning can be seen as almost sadistic, seeming to come more from the other team losing than his winning.

After his overblot, Korbin begins to accept that he does need to actually care for himself before he can care for others.

Background

Korbin grew up in a busy, upper class household of his mother, father, and 3 younger siblings. Growing up he was seen as the “golden child,” much to his dismay and his siblings’ distaste. Korbin’s mother would put all her time and energy into him, forming him to be a “mini-me” to take over the family business. When Korbin grew older and decided he did not want to take over the family business, his mother grew furious. As punishment she pinioned his wings so he could no longer fly, one of his favorite pastimes. 

Despite his mother’s strict and sometimes harsh treatment of him, Korbin was often blamed by his siblings for their mother’s favoritism. He was hated by his siblings and had very few friends as he was not allowed out much. 

Once he was old enough to, he attempted to enlist under the Land of Briar, but was turned away due to his disability (his wings). This left him to continue to work under his mother, if only to make due. He learned that he was only valued if he was providing something to those around him. He made friends by completing their work in the office, appeased his mother by taking on more responsibilities, and was punished for trying to do things for himself. The only time he has for himself is when he is asleep and when he showers, and even those are limited. His self care falls to the wayside to focus on work. 

When he receives his letter of acceptance to Night Raven College, he sees it as both a burden and an escape. He can finally be far from his mother, maybe even make a life of his own, or he has the opportunity to fail her again.

Korbin’s signature spell, “Bird’s Eye View,” allows for him to see the situation going on around him from different perspectives. This spell is likened to an out-of-body experience by Korbin. This spell leaves his body limp and tires him when used for too long. 

Trivia

• The name Korbin is a twist on the words “corbeau” or “corvus,” which is the old French or Latin word for “crow” or “raven.” His last name, Dio, is a reference to Diablo, from Maleficent, who he is twisted from. 

• He does not allow many people to touch his wings, Desiree (and later Lilia) is the only person other than himself to have preened them since his childhood.
  • When he was a child, Korbin’s mother would help preen his wings, but after she pinioned them, she found them too “disgusting” to preen herself. 
  • When Korbin is stressed, startled, or angry, his feathers puff up like a bird’s would. 
  • Korbin has fluffy, soft feathers that mimic a happy trail.
